Caring For Cedar Siding
Depending on the color that you desire most, cedar siding can be cared for in
three ways. If you leave the cedar untreated, it will naturally weather to a
grayish color. If you do not like the grayish color that is produced then you
have the option of either staining the cedar or painting it. It really comes
down to personal preference.
Cedar siding must be properly treated in order to remain in good condition and
retain its great qualities. When properly treated, cedar shakes and shingles are
highly fire resistant, as well as wind and hail resistant. Furthermore, cedar
that is cut from the heartwood of trees that are naturally decay resistant, such
as western red cedar, tend to be longer lasting and more beautifully aged siding
materials compared to many man-made materials.
When installing cedar shakes and shingles, proper fasteners must be used. This
is especially true since cedar siding will occasionally become wet. You should
always consult with a local professional for the appropriate backing materials
in your area.
Below are some additional maintenance tips that should be followed when caring
for cedar siding:
- Use rust resistant nails or staples. It is recommended that you use stainless
steel of hot-dipped galvanized nails of the appropriate length.
- Avoid using electroplated galvanized or unfinished nails because they will
rust and possibly stain your siding. Sometimes these nails will weaken and
result in very expensive repairs.
- Remove debris from your cedar siding because if it is left to accumulate it
can impede or trap run-off rainwater that then can result in leaks.
- Clean the cedar shakes and shingles by using a stiff broom or brush.
- Remove debris from the gaps between the individual cedar shingles.
- Remove mold and mildew with a solution of 3 ounces trisodium phosphate (TSP),
1 ounce of liquid laundry detergent, 1 quart of 5 percent sodium hychlorite
(household bleach), and 3 quarts of warm water. Use a soft brush.
- To control moss gross, use a 10 percent solution of zinc sulfate.
